Common Questions
Quick answers to what we're asked most often.
What skill level do I need to join a photo tour?
Our photo tours welcome photographers of all skill levels, from passionate beginners to seasoned professionals. The key requirement is enthusiasm for photography and a willingness to learn. You should be comfortable with your camera's basic functions understanding aperture, shutter speed, and ISO is helpful but not mandatory. Our small group sizes (typically 6-8 participants) allow our award-winning photographers to provide personalized instruction tailored to your specific level. Whether you're just moving beyond auto mode or you're looking to refine advanced techniques like long exposures or astro-photography, we adapt our teaching approach to match your needs. Many participants join us precisely to level up their skills in a supportive, immersive environment. Each tour description specifies the recommended skill level, but if you're unsure, contact us we're happy to recommend the best fit for your current abilities and goals.
How do I choose the right photo tour for me?
Choosing the right photo tour depends on several factors: your photography interests, physical fitness level, preferred travel style, and what you want to learn. Start by considering what subjects excite you most dramatic landscapes, wildlife, cultural photography, or astrophotography. Each of our tours focuses on specific photographic opportunities aligned with the destination's strengths. Next, review the fitness rating (Easy, Moderate, Hard, Extreme) on each tour page. Most tours involve 2-4 hours of walking daily, sometimes on uneven terrain, so honest self-assessment is important. Consider the season and weather conditions some photographers thrive in challenging weather that creates dramatic images, while others prefer more comfortable conditions. Look at the sample itinerary and daily schedule to ensure it matches your travel pace. Finally, read about the lead photographer for each tour their teaching style and specialty should resonate with your learning goals. If you're still unsure, reach out to us directly. We've guided over 1,000 photographers and can recommend the perfect tour based on a brief conversation about your interests and experience.
What happens if I need to cancel my booking?
We understand that life is unpredictable, which is why we offer a structured cancellation policy designed to be as fair as possible to both participants and our operations. If you cancel more than 90 days before your tour departure, you'll receive a full refund minus a small administrative fee (typically €150-200) to cover processing costs and non-refundable deposits we've made on your behalf. Cancellations between 90-60 days before departure receive a 50% refund of the tour price. Within 60 days of departure, bookings are non-refundable, as we've committed to accommodations, permits, and logistics that cannot be recovered. However, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and equipment damage. Quality travel insurance typically costs 5-7% of your tour price and provides peace of mind for unexpected situations like illness, family emergencies, or travel disruptions. We can recommend insurance providers who specialize in photography tour coverage. In some cases, we may be able to transfer your booking to a different departure date (subject to availability and a transfer fee), which can be a good alternative to cancellation.
What if I'm traveling solo?
Solo travelers are not just welcome they're the heart of our community! Approximately 40% of our participants travel solo, and many of our most enthusiastic repeat guests started their journey with us alone. Photography tours are uniquely suited for solo travelers because you're immediately part of a small group (6-8 people) who share your passion for photography. Unlike general tours where you might feel like an outsider, here you're among like minded individuals from day one. We offer flexible accommodation options: you can book a single room for privacy (single supplement applies, typically 30-40% of the base price), or we can pair you with another solo traveler of the same gender in a shared room at no extra cost. Many lasting friendships form during our tours we've even had participants who met on one tour return together for another! The small group dynamic means you're never truly alone but also have space when you want it. Our photographers are skilled at fostering an inclusive, supportive atmosphere where solo travelers feel comfortable and connected. If you're hesitant about traveling alone, a photography tour is honestly one of the best ways to ease into solo travel while having the structure and community of a group experience.
How physically demanding are the photo tours?
Physical demands vary significantly by destination and tour type, which is why we provide a detailed fitness rating (Easy, Moderate, Hard, Extreme) for each tour. Most of our tours fall into the Moderate category, requiring comfortable walking for 2-4 hours daily, sometimes on uneven terrain like rocky trails, beaches, or mountain paths. You should be able to carry your camera gear (typically 5-10 kg) for extended periods and handle stairs or gentle inclines without difficulty. Easy-rated tours involve minimal walking, mostly on paved surfaces, and are suitable for most fitness levels. Hard rated tours might include longer hikes (4-6 hours), steeper terrain, or higher altitudes, requiring good cardiovascular fitness. Extreme-rated tours are rare but involve challenging conditions like multi-day treks or extreme weather. It's important to note that we're not training for marathons we're here to capture great photographs. We move at a photographer's pace, with frequent stops for shooting, and our itineraries build in rest time. However, being honest about your fitness level ensures you'll enjoy the experience rather than struggle through it. If you have specific concerns about mobility, injuries, or health conditions, contact us before booking. We can often accommodate special needs or suggest alternative tours that better match your physical capabilities.
